Heading for what you want

Liu Ying

Four and a half months’ stay in Cleveland enlightened me more than ever. Not only did I see what nursing and its education is like there, but the virtues and good manners moved me profoundly. I truly started to believe in the deeply rooted freedom, which I have never thought of. Anyway, the experience of learning is to be more important for me, as I am a student.

I don’t deny that the undergraduates in the States must work harder than we do. By saying must, I mean if one wants to get comparatively high scores, he/she have to give more and more. You couldn’t possibly think about how many quizzes a course would have, if you don’t experience by yourself. I even started to miss that kind of feeling during which I spared no effort studying. Language is not a easy thing for all of us. Terminologies are what we have to start all over and are not facilely remembered. Even in the clinic, there might be times when we were unable to keep up with the nurses and had no choice but asking them to repeat or explain for us. Here’s what I want to tell our students, if you have decided to have the same experience, remember to make yourself fully prepared, and this will certainly help you a lot. It might be tough, but promotive though. During that time, we had really much work in the clinic—all kinds of sheets that you would not ever forget. Of course, coorperation is what everyone concerned about, let’s say, in every course. The teachers always make use of all that they can find, to make themselves fully understood. They are nice and helpful all the time, whatever the problem is. Just like they always say, don’t hesitate to ask if you need their help.

Now think about a question. If you have this chance of being aboard, will you ever make use of it to enjoy your journey? The answer is yes. For me, this is more of a habit. My friends and I went to many places, just as what I had always been doing. I like traveling. Every time I saw the limpid lakes and rosy leaves and blue sky, the magnificant churches and the distinctive buildings of different universities, I felt the sense of rejoice. You may also find that people in the US came from different places, or their ancestors ever did. Then you will have a better understanding of intergration. Anyway, what impressed me the most, were the words freedom and equality, which became more concrete than ever. I probably hadn’t thought about the true meaning of life, before I came here. For now, I am quite sure about what I want because I saw how people lived their own lives.

Finally, I want to give some suggestions, which I think would be very helpful. First, read whenever you can, even if you are waiting for the bus. Second, exercise as much as possible, no matter running on the streets or walking for distance. Third, do things that you are interested in. Don’t make yourself a person without any hobby or specialty, and if you are trying to learn something new, it is never too late. Just remember, you can do much more than you could think of.

This period of exchange is so precious to me and it is like fortune in part of my life, which will always encourage me to go forward without hesitation. Given this, I hope more exchange programs can be actualized so that we can have more students benefit from them, and together make our nursing better and better.
